Originally as the Naval Engineering Department of the PLA Military Engineering Institute, established in 1953, the College of Shipbuilding Engineering is now the key for scientific research and personnel training in China’s shipbuilding industry, naval equipment and marine development. In 2017, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering was listed as one of the “double first-rate” disciplines and was awarded A+ in the fourth national assessment.
Among the College’s 185-person faculty, 145 are full-time teachers, 46 of whom are professors, 71 associate professors, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 10 national-level talents and 19 part-time professors at home and abroad. There are 70 doctoral tutors (including 10 part-time) and 128 master tutors (including 21 part-time). In the past five years, the average annual scientific research fund has amounted to 240 million yuan. Teachers and students have published more than 2,000 academic papers and 40 books. Over 50 scientific research achievements have won national and provincial awards.
The College offers three undergraduate programs, namely naval architecture and marine engineering, port, channel and coast engineering, and marine robotics. “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering” “Mechanics” and “Hydraulic Engineering” have gained the first-level master's degree authorization. “Civil Hydraulic Engineering” has been awarded as a master's degree authorization. The college has 2 first-level disciplines of “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering” and “Mechanics” doctoral degree authorization point and “Mechanical Engineering” doctoral degree authorization. It has the Center for Post-doctoral Studies of “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering”, 1 national key discipline, 2 national defense key disciplines and 1 provincial key discipline. The discipline of“Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering”has been selected as a national first-class undergraduate program construction site, a national-level characteristic major, a national-level comprehensive pilot reform major, a national-level excellent engineer program pilot major, a key major of the National Defense Science and Technology Commission, and a key major in Heilongjiang Province. “Port, Channel and Coast Engineering” has passed the national engineering education professional certification and been selected as a first-class undergraduate program construction site in Heilongjiang Province.
The college has five national scientific research platforms, including one key national laboratory of underwater robotics, one national experimental teaching demonstration center for naval architecture and marine engineering, one national maritime virtual simulation experiment teaching center, China-Russia joint laboratory for polar technology and equipment, and one international joint research center for naval architecture and marine engineering mechanics. It also has 9 provincial-level scientific research platforms.
In 2014, Ministry of Science and Technology approved the establishment of International Joint Research Center for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Mechanics. In 2015, the College, as a key founder, led the establishment of ICNAME, the first international organization for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering innovation and cooperation. In 2018, it was approved by the Ministry of Education for the International Cooperation Experiment of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. In 2019, it was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China-Russia Joint Laboratory for Polar Technology and Equipment. In the past 5 years, more than 10 high-level international conferences have been held.
The College has established close cooperation with over 30 internationally renowned universities and research institutes. The International Classification Society, as well as domestic and foreign shipbuilding companies and institutes, offers special scholarships in the College. The student employment rate has always been above 95%, the undergraduate enrollment rate is over 65%, and over 70% of the graduates are employed in the shipbuilding industry and the national defense system.
